![]() Has open-world game design improved much since 2010? Has the AAA scene in general? We haven’t seen much bravery, and that’s in part because of the areas we focus on-and ignore-in game critiques. We praise graphics to almost fetishistic levels, but often fail to hold our medium to account for its ideas, its imagery, and its lack of innovation. As with the posters, Cyberpunk 2077 slides by on recognizable images, ones that often harm minorities-and in turn is praised on a purely aesthetic level rather than examining what these aesthetics depict. Much like Night City’s posters, many AAA titles are visually gorgeous but thematically empty, if not downright thematically harmful. While aspects of the game were criticized, too many were prepared to look the other way and blame the game’s every flaw on bugs. Cyberpunk 2077 gave us more of the same, with little introspection, and was praised for it. If you switch the name Cyberpunk 2077 with “any AAA open-world video game since Assassin’s Creed,” the sentence will still make sense. villains being Japanese, and the Asian-coded Tyger Claws gang wielding katanas.Ĭyberpunk 2077 is a map game with a linear story, side quests, romance options, driving, and gunplay. This combination of English and Asian styles, in a way that both renders the Asian portions useless yet implies an insidious invasion of Western culture, is one of many examples of “y ellow peril” tropes within the game, alongside the central Arasaka Corp. There are many others, including a hotel sign which reads “HO,” followed by two Japanese kana which resemble the letters “T” and “L” but are logically nonsensical. Seven of them objectified women in some way, while the eighth depicted a fat man on the toilet. At one point, I stepped into an elevator with eight adverts. We see further adverts that feature phallic champagne bottles (spraying froth on a woman’s face and chest), phallic snakes (a poster which reads “wide open” and shows the snake slithering to a woman’s bare buttocks), and phallic drinks (several, one of which sees a woman licking the shaft, another that shows a faceless woman holding it between her breasts while dogs lick her stomach). Another, similar poster features the tagline “Too good to waste” and depicts a nearly naked woman seductively licking liquor off the floor. From the angle of the arm, she appears to be kneeling, this hand firmly in control of her. A poster for Dynalar, with the tagline “It’s all about the touch,” shows a topless woman whose hair is being roughly grabbed by an arm that disappears off-screen. Others are less comical in this marriage. It’s a pink phallic gun, with the tagline “It ain’t the gun that squirts!” The poster also depicts a beautiful woman shooting herself in the head with an explosion of pink goo, while she masturbates with her other hand. Perhaps the most cartoonish marriage of sex and violence is the advert for the Squirtaquisitor 7000. There are far too many individual posters in Cyberpunk worthy of analysis, but just taking a handful highlights the exploitative nature of Night City’s world. CD Projekt confirmed in April that Cyberpunk 2077’s first expansion was targeting a 2023 release window. While Cyberpunk 2077 presents the posters in the background without comment, they are so ever-present and shocking that the game can be seen to support the ideas behind these images. Developer CD Projekt Red spent the better part of the following year bug-squashing and polishing the game, work that ultimately delayed an update for PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game and its first expansion. The update also brings new features to the game including a clothing transmog system, cross-platform progression, and a playable Roach Race minigame arcade cabinet.Ĭyberpunk 2077 was originally released in December 2020, but in a notoriously buggy state. Patch 1.6 introduces equippable items from the anime to Cyberpunk 2077, including the the jacket worn by David Martinez, the anime’s protagonist, and a shotgun used by another character from the show. The Edgerunners Update is named for its tie-in to the Netflix animated series coming next week. The game’s new 1.6 patch, known as the Edgerunners Update, will be the final update for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk 2077. Phantom City will be available for the Google Stadia, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X versions of Cyberpunk 2077 - but not, apparently, for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game.
